Safeguarding in Education

Safeguarding children and young people is everyone’s responsibility. However education providers (0-25) play a unique role due to their frequent contact with children and families, and the relationships that develop over time.

The new Education Safeguarding Service provides advice, information and guidance to educational settings on their safeguarding arrangements and practice. Our aim is to:

  • equip staff with the knowledge and skills to protect every child and young person in Somerset from harm
  • support children and young people to develop their potential
  • create an environment where they feel safe to learn.

Safeguarding advice is available to all Somerset Education Providers through developing local education safeguarding networks, DSL briefings and traded packages of additional support.

The Education Safeguarding Service sits within the Access & Additional Learning Needs strand of Inclusion Somerset and can be contacted at somerseteducationsafeguarding@somerset.gov.uk

Much of the work undertaken by the service is reported to the new Education Safeguarding Partnership and helps drive local area policy and strategy.
